Chikungunya Virus hits America! Illness has been declared an Epidemic in Puerto Rico! Tips from CDC on how to prevent it!
Recently the first case of Chikungunya was reported in the United States! The virus infected a man and woman in Florida, and experts believe that more cases will pop up in that region of the country, possibly throughout the rest of North America as well.
Scientist are alarmed by the recent infection hitting America, but they're not surprised. They knew the time would come. The virus is already an issue overseas in places such as the Caribbean and has been declared an epidemic in Puerto Rico. Scientist believe the disease originally hit America by travelers who were bit overseas, that came back to the states infected, and the mosquito's here bit the humans that were infected by the foreign mosquito's, who in turn bit more humans! (I hope you get what I mean! LOL!)
The known symptoms for Chikungunya include fever, severe joint pain, headaches and muscle aches.
But here is the good news! Thankfully Chikungunya is rarely fatal.
The Center for Disease Control has laid out some guidelines to help prevent Chikungunya.
Here is what you can do. Drain standing water from around your home. Use insect repellent.
Wear long sleeves and pants. Also cover your doors and windows with screens!
